This exhibition brings everyday domestic items that belonged to Heide founders John and Sunday Reed into dialogue with artworks from the museum's collection and loans by a selection of contemporary artists. Highlighting the overlooked, fragile and once-ordinary, the pieces on display invite us to reflect on the tangible traces of daily life in the early days of Heide, and the varied ways in which possessions shape-and are shaped by-memory, experience, and context. Collectively, these works explore the symbolic associations held by objects, opening a conversation about the nature and significance of collecting, and the resonances personal effects gain over time and in changing environments. Across varied practices and media, the participating artists each demonstrate an interest in translating individual histories, reworking archives and recontextualising found materials. Using techniques such as assemblage, surface intervention, and processes that fragment, repeat or unravel, they probe the instability of memory and trace how personal items emerge as cultural signifiers. Instead of fixed emblems of a person, time or place, the works suggest mutable, layered markers which speak to inheritance, displacement, belonging, value systems, and the quiet negotiations of history and identity.
